Leading fibres, yarns, knitted fabrics and knitwear show SPINEXPO has launched its trends for Spring/Summer 2013. The following is an extract from the SPINEXPO Trends Spring/Summer 2013 book which can be downloaded at the foot of this article.

 UNIVERSAL TRANSFORMATION

Spring Summer 2013 continues with the message of looking beyond ourselves and immediate world as an isolated unit to find greater strength in the way we live our lives.

We can see the benefits of joining with others to learn about new cultures, methods and the force of a collective, but we do not want the unique and the individual to be lost. For A/W 2012 we were re-looking at our world and culture to improve and grow, but for S/S 2013 we want to stride forward and explore our world and beyond into new unchartered territory to inspire us.

A greater emphasis is being placed on creative arts, in developed and undeveloped cultures to give us new ideals and thought processes, whilst also reconnecting with the concept of craft and ancient hand skills that are unknown to a digitally programmed youth culture.

Life for all is becoming more transient with constant global transference of ideas due to the ease of travel today and the development of the technological age. We do not even need to leave our homes to see what is going on in the world.

This has levelled cultural differences making the world smaller. We have exhausted our immediate surroundings for inspiration and resources, therefore we are looking further into new worlds, into space, underwater, the arts and hidden cultures.

We are looking to travel and explore on a cosmic scale. It is time to transform ourselves and our world on a universal scale. Cosmic Transformation: reaching out into space, harnessing the lights of stars, the moon and planets to create an element of sci-fi and cultural futurism.

Aquatic Transformation

Exploring deep into the ocean into an underwater world of darkness punctuated by bright, unusual forms reflecting light and movement. Cultural Transformation: immersing oneself in the ideals and beauty of the art world, from performance to painting and literature, cultural influences offer delicacy, subtlety and refined elegance.

Nomadic transformation

Inspired by the earth and what we can create from what the earth offers, travelling the globe to discover surviving traditions and obscure cultures, maintaining the artisan.

Graphic design has slipped into all perspectives and coherent with all aspects of design areas such as industrial design, interior design, and most commonly and noticeably- fashion design. With the fashion industry exposing bright and innovative creators, it attempts to reveal the power of graphic design in fashion brand label and examine how these designs alter our fashion sense and influence our choices of purchase.

Manchester based illustrator and graphic designer, Kris Tate was born and studied in Guatemala City. Her work is inspired by indie music, retro and vintage fashion from the 60’s and 80’s. Her work is a bright and vibrant combination of animals, imaginary worlds and brilliant colors. She has exhibited all around the world and is gaining critical acclaim.

Her designs are an expression of her emotions and have a definite Latin American feel to them. Artworks Cocktail Paradiso, Pink Beach and Watermelon sunset have a distinctly high summer feeling about them (pictured main). They are a cacophony of abstract geometry and electrifying life, yet still manage to be commercial and aesthetically pleasing. Clearly there is a kind of controlled craziness at work here which feels just right for a contemporary South American trend the MPDClick trends team are currently working on.

Florals on dark backgrounds were a big trend on the Fall 12 runways, and the look took on lots of variety. Overall, a great Wintry update to the vintage floral look.

Part 1: A Universal Transformation

Spring/Summer 2013 continues with the message of looking beyond ourselves and immediate world as an isolated unit to find greater strength in the way we live our lives. We can see the benefits of joining with others to learn about new cultures, methods and the force of a collective, but we do not want the unique and the individual to be lost.

19th Session Shanghai

6/7/8 March 2012

This has leveled cultural differences making the world smaller.

Aquatic Transformation: exploring deep into the ocean into an underwater world of darkness punctuated by bright, unusual forms reflecting light and movement. Cultural Transformation: immersing oneself in the ideals and beauty of the art world, from performance to painting and literature, cultural influences offer delicacy, subtlety and refined elegance. Nomadic transformation: inspired by the earth and what we can create from what the earth offers, travelling the globe to discover surviving traditions and obscure cultures, maintaining the artisan.

Color awakens the senses, bringing us new ideas, new directions and ultimately new destinations. With expectancy, color inspires us to build a solid foundation and to finish with a wisp of creativity. For the Spring/Summer 2013 season, we have gathered new directions in color, and with Inspirations, we offer these ideas to you.

More saturated, more defined hues are reflected in Sunflowers and Everyday Art. Bold, yet comfortable, these colors rely on the primary colors of blue, red and yellow.

Sweet Little Things and Dreaming bring us an innocence and subtle refinement that leave us breathless in our pursuit of tranquility. Not meant to shock or to push us to new levels, these colors give us peaceful rest with just a hint of playfulness.

In Cool Vibrations, cobalt and turquoise compliment golden yellows and warm neutrals to create a feel of dreamy solitude. The urge to throw off your shoes and wiggle your toes in the sand is almost too much to bear. Feeling refreshed, we move into City Pulse where the colors exude energy and vitality bringing us alive with possibilities. Modern, yet not overdone, we are inspired by directions that often take root in the heart of the city.

Driven to change, driven to abandon the ordinary for something timeless, we find Retro Rebellion. A palette of almost universal, all-season appeal with earthy tones and denim blues. Sophisticated colors to take us back and move us forward.

Roberto Cavalli Group, one of the most prestigious Italian fashion brands, and Coty Inc., a leading global beauty company, have announced that they have signed a license agreement for the creation, development, and distribution of Roberto Cavalli and “Just Cavalli” fragrances. This takes place when current ICR-ITF licence term ends.

Roberto Cavalli’s new fragrance is promising, with a new outlook and the launch of a signature women’s eau de parfum, starting February 2012. In late July 2011, Cavalli signed the fragrance license with Coty for the development and distribution of scents under the Ronerto Cavalli and “Just Cavalli” brands. Coty Prestige, a division of Coty, is discontinuing Cavalli’s existing fragrances and plans to enlarge it’s scent footprint.

“The idea of the fragrance is to expand beyond fashion”, explained Francoise Mariez, senior vice president of marketing for European fragrances at Coty Prestige. “If we manage to duplicate what Cavalli has done with fashion fragrance, it could be very interesting for us in terms of expansion”.

Although the focus of attention is firmly on fragrance, the irrepressible Cavalli turned enthusiastic when quizzed about the future possibility of launching color cosmetics. Eva Cavalli, creative director of the fashion house, described it as “a dream” and said makeup would be further explored in the next year.

“Just Cavalli” fragrance currently licensed to ICR-ITF

“I love it. Color is key for me,” said Cavalli, known for his bold colors and animal prints. “I’d like to make many, many things with color and cosmetics – even color for the hair.” Meanwhile, the positioning of the new Roberto Cavalli Eau de Parfum is simple: Don’t go unnoticed. The scent’s gold-colored Amber-like floral juice was created by Givaudan’s Louise Turner. Top notes include pink pepper, while there’s an orange blossom note in the heart and a tonka bean note in the base. Coty Prestige executives worked with Eva Cavalli on the bottle that’s meant to evoke feminine curves. It is topped by a gold-hued, tiara-shaped cap sporting Roberto Cavalli’s initials and ringed with a thin tiger-print band.

The archetypal Cavalli woman, whom the designer called “sexy and wild, just like my fashion,” inspired the fragrance. He said women he finds sexy are strong-willed, glamorous, independent divas.

The face of Roberto Cavalli’s new scent is Elisa Sednaoui, the half-Italian, half-Egyptian model-actress who’s best known for her role in Christopher Thompson’s comedy “Bus Palladium.” The fragrance’s print campaign, shot by Steven Klein, will come in single and double pages. A video campaign, lens-ed by Johan Renck, stars Sednaoui and a tiger. It comes in 15-, 20- and 30-second spots destined for TV. A 45-second version is for the Internet. (Renck and Cavalli had worked together in 2007 on the commercial for the designer’s H&M fashion tie-in.)

In the first week of February, Roberto Cavalli’s fragrance will be introduced in Italy and elsewhere in the world excluding the Far East and Russia, which are slated to get the scent in the fall. Launch exclusives will include Harrods in the U.K. between Feb. 12 and March 7, and Sephora in France. The scent will be carried in Cavalli fashion stores worldwide, as well as in prestige perfumery channels. In the U.S., the 30-ml. and 75-ml. edp sprays are priced at $48 and $85, respectively.
Coty executives would not discuss sales projections, but industry sources estimate the new Cavalli scent will generate $50 million in first-year wholesale revenues globally. This year is full of new projects for the Cavalli house, which, alongside the fragrance, will launch a home collection, a new accessories line for the Class Roberto Cavalli label, plus work with Swiss watchmaker Franck Muller on jeweled timepieces.

Romain de Tirtoff (November 23, 1892 – April 21, 1990)

The Russian-born French artist and designer, known by the pseudonym Erte, was a diversely talented 20th century artist and designer who flourished in an array of fields: fashion, jewelry, graphic arts, costume design, interior decor and set design (film, theatre, and opera). In 1907, he lived one year in Paris. He said about this time “I did not discover Beardsley until when I had already been in Paris for a year”. In 1910–12, Romain moved to Paris to pursue a career as a designer. He made this decision despite strong objections from his father, who wanted Romain to continue the family tradition and become a naval officer. Romain assumed his pseudonym to avoid disgracing the family. He worked for Paul Poiret from 1913-1914. In 1915, he secured his first substantial contract with Harper’s Bazaar magazine, and thus launched an illustrious career that included designing costumes and stage sets. Between 1915–1937, Erte designed over 200 covers for Harper’s Bazaar, and his illustrations would also appear in such publications as Illustrated London News, Cosmopolitan, Ladies Home Journal, and Vogue. Decades later, his style still inspires many, as proved by Yves Saint Laurent‘s 1976 Ballets Russes collection, with its rich brocades and flowing skirts, and now the dramatic flourishes of Oscar de la Renta.

NEW YORK

Opening Ceremony is a multifaceted environment comprised of retail spaces, showroom, and gallery that establishes a new international creative forum in downtown Manhattan. Opening Ceremony brings together emerging American talent with both young and established designers and artists from abroad. Each year, the unique commercial and cultural character of a visiting city is represented at Opening Ceremony by capturing the essence of the consumer experience. Opening Ceremony recreates a shopping excursion based on four different perspectives–established designer (designers that best exemplify the country), emerging designer, one of a kind vintage pieces and select items from the open-air markets.

Opening Ceremony appropriates the mission statement of the modern day Olympics from the founder, Baron Pierre de Coubertin. In 1896, he transformed what the Greeks had created into a modern day business venture. The Olympics were founded under the guise of creatively merging sports, business, and global participation. Opening Ceremony takes from this foundation and applies these elements towards fashion. Beginning with USA vs. Hong Kong in Fall 2002, each year Opening Ceremony has introduced a new country to its home team. Following Hong Kong, Opening Ceremony represented Brazil (2003), Germany (2004), United Kingdom with an exclusive launch of infamous London-based retailer Topshop and Topman in 2005, Sweden in 2007, and New York vs. Los Angeles in 2007 as well. Currently, USA vs. Japan (2008) embarks on a collaboration with POSTALCO, Japan’s premiere stationary, and will house the first ever “Opening Ceremony presents Middle Space / Comme des Garcons shop”. Opening Ceremony collaborated with the iconic Japanese toy maker, Sanrio, on “Opening Ceremony Loves Sanrio”. To highlight this collaboration, Sanrio shopping stations and vending machines will pop up in the New York and Los Angeles boutiques.

Opening Ceremony currently features Proenza Schouler (US), Rachel Comey (US), Mary Ping (US), Rodarte (US), Alexandre Herchcovitch (Brazil), Lutz (Germany), Schiesser Revival (Germany), Pulver (Germany), BLESS (Germany), Hussein Chalayan (UK), Marios Schwab (UK), Topshop (UK), Vlas Blomme (Japan), Whereabouts (Japan) and many more established and young designers.

In Spring 2008, Opening Ceremony launched an ongoing design collaboration with the actress and style icon, Chloë Sevigny. Inspired by nostalgia for her early days in New York, high school thrift store finds, and music by Depeche Mode and the Slits, the line featured body-conscious gingham check skirts, mesh jersey party dresses, and floral prints from the renowned textile maker, Liberty’s of London. In Fall 2009, Chloë Sevigny will continue her collaboration with Opening Ceremony by designing a line of her favorite menswear pieces.

Collaborative design has been a key aspect of Opening Ceremony’s retail philosophy. Joint projects have included a special line of Opening Ceremony for Tretorn sneakers, a re-launch of classic 80s styles from seminal surf brand Maui and Sons, an 8.8.08 Olympic celebration and limited edition merchandise with Nike, American-made Red Wing shoes (previously offered in Japan only), exclusive stationary from POSTALCO, and the first ever co-branding project with Stetson.

LOS ANGELES

Opening Ceremony opened its Los Angeles location in April of 2007 in the former dance studio space of Hollywood icon, Charlie Chaplin. The 10,000 square foot boutique, located in West Hollywood, is the second shop operated by Opening Ceremony founders Carol Lim and Humberto Leon. Featuring a sprawling space of hallways and separate rooms, the shop’s inspiration stems from the experience of driving the L.A. freeways. Also featured is a new concept of boutique shopping: Branded shop-in-shop’s within Opening Ceremony L.A.’s second-floor “Mini-Mall.” Individual brands have created their own atmosphere and individual retail environments. Designers participating include Acne, Nom de Guerre, Mayle, Topshop, Exquisite Costume, Schiesser Revival, DAP Art Books, Other Music, BOY, Band of Outsiders, and Opening Ceremony’s own private label collection.

The additional 6,000 square feet of retail shopping space parallels each label’s particular aesthetic and overall brand image using furniture, fixtures, wall decorations, and color schemes in each designer’s likeness. The key objective was to create individual “shops” for each designer, as if they were to open their own freestanding stores, but to combine them in an environment represented by Opening Ceremony.
